Checked Baggage

Free Baggage AllowanceWhen you travel on an Air Canada or Jazz operated flight, your complimentary baggage allowance is determined by your fare, destination, date of travel and frequent flyer status.

Maximum size is determined by the sum of the greatest outside length plus the greatest outside width plus the greatest outside height - wheels & handles included.

If your baggage exceeds your complimentary allowance (due to number, size and/or weight), you need to purchase an additional checked baggage allowance.

If your baggage exceeds any of the following limits, please contact your local Air Canada Cargo sales office, as these bags cannot be checked at the airport for transport.
  • 32kg (70lb) in weight
  • 292cm (115in) in size (length + width + height, wheels & handles included)
  • 203cm (80in) in length
Exception: Air Canada Cargo cannot handle shipments from or via the US as passengers are considered as unknown shippers for cargo purposes. Please contact another shipping company for this service.

Codeshare Flights

Passengers who purchase travel on a codeshare flight (i.e. a flight with an Air Canada flight number, but operated by another airline) are subject to the checked baggage policy of the airline operating their flight. If your itinerary includes a connection to/from a flight not operated by Air Canada, the baggage policy of the carrier operating the first segment of your itinerary applies for all flights until you reach your destination.

Please note that if your baggage cannot be through-checked (i.e. if you must claim your baggage and recheck it with another airline for your onward connection), your baggage allowance is subject to the rules of the airlines with which you check your baggage.

Learn more about codeshare flights, and the policies of Air Canada's codeshare partners.

Important Information

Passengers whose travel involves connecting flights on other carriers should enquire at the airport check-in counter whether they may check their bags to their final destination, or whether they must claim their luggage at the connection point and check it in again when connecting to another flight.

Passengers who have opted out of their checked baggage allowance are not entitled to check any bags for free. Customers who wish to opt back in to check baggage will be charged $50 per passenger, per direction.

Security Enhancements - Duty Free

Passengers travelling with liquids or gels in containers over 100mL/100g (3.4oz) that are placed in carry-on baggage will have these items confiscated at the security checkpoint, and additional charges may apply to check the items (if possible).

Passengers with connecting flights are advised not to purchase liquids or gels in containers over 100ml/100g (3.4oz) on board the aircraft (or at duty-free), if they do not have:
  • access to checked luggage between connecting flights.
  • room in their checked luggage to pack their duty-free purchases before re-checking their bags for their next flight.
Special Tips
  • The following items must always be placed in your carry-on baggage:
    • laptop computers*,
    • car and house keys,
    • medication,
    • cash,
    • high value items such as cameras, jewellery and electronic devices.
  • View a detailed list of dangerous goods that are either strictly regulated or forbidden as carry-on or checked baggage. Valuable information can also be found on the CATSA website (http://www.catsa.gc.ca).
  • Do not wrap bungee cords, ties or straps around baggage.
  • Remove all old airline tags from your luggage.
  • Attach identification tags to the inside and outside of the bag, noting your destination as well as home address and relevant contact information.
* On smaller aircraft (e.g. Jazz Dash-8 or CRJ) with limited onboard storage space, customers are asked to deposit their carry-on items on a cart as they board the plane. Laptop computers must be removed from any carry-on baggage that is deposited on such carts.
